VOTE TO FISH:

28/07/10:The upcoming federal election represents the most important election in Australia’s history for anglers

Most anglers have little time for the ranting and raving within our political system. And who could blame them. The angler’s world is the natural world of aquatic ecosystems and the great outdoors. A far cry from the often farcical, plastic world that is politics.

Most anglers treasure their pastime and as a result are true conservationists of the marine environment. However, the looming federal election hides a threat to all anglers and will prove a pivotal point in the history of recreational fishing in Australia. For this reason, it is most important that anglers take far more care in voting than ever before!

The Greens have played their hand and stated that they intend to turn an absolute minimum of 30% of Australian commonwealth waters into marine parks. This is on top of extensive existing and proposed state-based marine parks. Considering that marine parks are revised every 5-10 years and more or larger Sanctuary Zones are created each revision, then it is feasible that within a short period of time we could be banned from fishing virtually all of our favourite areas if The Greens secure the balance of power in the Australian Senate.

It is important that anglers are aware that The Australian Labor Party has prostituted itself to The Greens by agreeing to a preference deal with them. As we know The Greens are hell bent on locking Australians out of marine and terrestrial areas and virtually banning the many outdoor pastimes that make us Australian!

In essence, this only leaves The Shooters and Fishers Party, The Liberal Party, The Nationals and The Australian Fishing and Lifestyle Party (QLD only) that represent the interests of anglers.

Any vote for The Australian Labor Party or any party offering preferences to The Greens will put your treasured pastime of fishing at risk!

Labor Ministers a "no show" at fishing roundtable:
21/07/10: – Federal Labor Ministers this week cancelled their attendance at a Ministerial Roundtable meeting set down to discuss issues facing recreational fishing.

Representatives of recreational fishing organisations around Australia had travelled to Canberra to attend Monday's ministerial meeting and were informed Fisheries Minister Tony Burke and Environment Minister Peter Garrett had withdrawn from the talks at the last moment. Last week's calling of the federal election is believed to be the reason for the ministers' non-attendance.

"The actions by these Federal Labor Ministers are a complete disgrace," said a Federal Coalition spokesperson for fisheries Senator Richard Colbeck................Read More

Bob Brown wants us to stop fishing - but his research is flawed:
15/08/10: – GREENS leader Bob Brown used a seven-year-old scientific paper, which has been consistently criticised as flawed research, to justify his demands for extensive fishing bans.

The Greens want a series of marine parks to extend 5km to 100km from shore along the Australian coast. They also want a huge marine park in the Coral Sea off the Queensland coast.

Commercial and recreational fishing would be outlawed in almost a third of the parks' waters under the Greens' plans. Justifying the fishing bans, Senator Brown said, "We have lost 90 per cent of the great fishes including marlin, tuna and snapper", a figure his office said yesterday came from a scientific paper known as "Meyers and Worm 2003".

The paper - Rapid Worldwide Depletion Of Predatory Fish Communities by Canadian academics Ransom Meyers and Boris Worm - made international headlines because of its claim that just 10 per cent of big predatory fish were left in the world's oceans because of commercial overfishing...............Read More
