Victoria: Port Pillip Bay Northwest:

St Kilda Marina -

Access: Six lane boat ramp located at the southern end of the marina off Beach Road. Due to it's central location the ramp gets extremely busy on summer weekends particularly on fine calm days. The ramp is on a medium angle and suitable for trailer boats to 7 metres plus.

Facilities: Floating pontoons for boat holding are on either side of the ramp. The marina and surrounding breakwalls provide wind and wave protection from all directions.

Parking: A previously large car park for boat trailers has been reduced slightly in recent years by various developments and a bicycle track.

Fees: $8 payable to an attendant, however this fee is possibly going to increase in the near future.

Fishing Tip: The waters offshore from St Kilda Marina provide excellent drifts for flathead drifts using whitebait, pilchard and rubber tail jigs. The inshore reefs just off the marina hold good populations of king george whiting, the preferred bait is local mussel. Snapper schools are scattered around this part of the Bay, but either wide of the shipping channel leading south to Fawkner Beacon is well worth a try before the sun hits the water. Other species such as gummy shark and the odd elephant fish are also caught here.

Altona (Seaholme) -

Access: The Altona boat ramp facility is quite possibly the finest large boating facility in Victoria. Three twin lane ramps with floating pontoons are completely protected by a breakwall which forms a safe harbour. This is much improved on the previous ramps which were heavily exposed to the south and east and shallow with sand bars. The size of the safe harbour reflects it's popularity.

Parking: Good Parking avaiable.

Facilities: Anglers are well catered for with good car parking and fish cleaning table.

Fees:$8 ticket machine. Annual tickets issued as per Warmies boat ramp information

Fishing Tip: The shallow waters of Altona Bay offer good fishing for pinky snapper, king george whiting and calamari squid. Look for areas of sand and weed patches. The Gellibrand Shoal opposite Williamston offers a wide variety of species from small snapper, whiting, trevally, tailor, flathead and garfish at various times. Flathead drifts with baits and trolling deep diving lures in Altona Bay will yield some nice flathead. Schools of Australian salmon occasionally enter the outskirts of Altona Bay and can be caught on trolled or cast silver metallic lures like the Lazer, Wonder Wobbler and Raiders.

Newport (Warmies)-

Access: One of Melbourne's newest boat ramp facilities, this twin lane boat ramp has fixed jetties either side of ramp and is suitable for craft around the 6 metre mark. The ramp launches into relatively shallow canal protected by a rock breakwall and this canal leads into the lower Yarra River. On entering the river stay in the channel and do not cut the corner if heading towards the Westgate Bridge as a submerged rock bar is below.

Parking: Excellent car and trailer parking facilities are available.

Facilities: A fish cleaning table and running water.

Fees: $ 8 ticket machine for 24 hours. A multi use annual ticket allows launching at both the Warmies and Altona boat ramps at around $ 100 pa.. City of Hobson Bay residents pay $60 pa..

Fishing Tip: This is the best ramp to use for access to the Docklands, the pylons and wharves offer some of the best bream fishing available in Victoria. A speed limit restriction of 5 knots applies in the waters of the Lower Yarra. Webb Dock and Princes Pier are only a short run from the ramp and offer good possibilities for big snapper and mulloway. Silver trevally and bream haunt the jetties around Williamstown.

Werribee South-

Access: The Werribee boat ramp facility is currently under construction at a cost of $ 450,000. Located near the mouth of the Werribee River, this aging facility previously had one twin lane ramp and a single lane ramp. After launching you need to stay in the channel leading out of the Werribee River until you reach a channel marker as the water either side is fairly shallow at low tide.

Parking: Werribee is also an extremely busy ramp and in the past car parking was inadequate this has been addressed with a much larger car park

Facilities: A fixed jetty on one side. The revamp looks to include at least two twin lane ramps with one of the floating pontoons already constructed.

Fees: Not advised at this time. Probably around $8.

Fishing Tip: The Werribee river is navigable for several kilometres and can fish well for bream and mullet, best baits are sandworm and bass yabby. Heading into Port Phillip bay the waters around Werribee offer some of the best whiting fishing in the Bay, particularly south of Werribee towards Kirk Point. Look for areas of sand with weed patches in 2 to 4 metres, fresh mussel is a prime bait. Small snapper are also in residence at times and the shallow flats offer very good flathead fishing either drifting baits or trolling deep diving lures.
