Illegal fishing blitz underway in Sydney waters:

05/01/09: The NSW Government is conducting a series of blitzes this summer targeting fisheries crime, with more than one quarter of people caught illegally fishing during the first operation in Sydney and the South Coast, Minister for Primary Industries Ian Macdonald said today.

“Illegal fishing is a serious crime, it’s stealing from a community resource, so our targeted blitzes and surveillance operations this summer will help stamp out illegal activity across Sydney and NSW,” Minister Macdonald said.

“During the latest operation fisheries officers checked180 fishers, 33 people were apprehended with 39 offences committed, ranging from exceeding the daily bag limit to having illegal and unlawful fishing gear...........[More]

A New Board for recreational fishing’s peak body:

01/01/09: Recfish Australia, the peak representative body for recreational fishers at a national level announced today the appointment of Bruce Schumacher (NSW Advisory Council on Recreational Fishing) as Chair of the board of directors. Bruce returns for his third term and Dr Adam Smith (Australian Underwater Federation – Spearfishing) has been nominated as Vice-Chair.

In a return to a representative board structure whereby each full member may nominate a board member, the board members for 2008-09 are: Chris Makepeace (Amateur Fishermen’s Association of the Northern Territory), John Burgess (Australian National Sportfishing Association), Des Wood (Recfishwest – Western Australia), Franz Grasser (VRFish – Victoria) and Tasmania (TARFish) are yet to nominate a representative..........[More]

Evinrude E-Tec Snare Gold On 2008 Abt Barra Tour:

22/12/08: With a record number of competitors across several tour events throughout the year, the 2008 ABT Barra Tour saw some big catches with Evinrude E-TEC again leading the way.

The latest rounds of competition were no exception with Evinrude powered teams snaring some big wins.

Powered by an Evinrude E-TEC 40hp, Cy and Kerrin Taylor grabbed several wins and podium finishes over the past two weeks of competition including the Peter Faust Dam Event, Awoonga Dam Night Championship, and Monduran Dam Morning Event. The wins ensured both competitors finished 1st (Cy Taylor) and 2nd (Kerrin Taylor) out of 147 entries in the Overall Angler of the Year Championship, as well as taking out the Overall Team division (out of 74 teams)...........[More]

Illegal fishers caught in inland fishing crackdown:

15/12/08: A total of 33 people have been caught illegally fishing following a recent operation in the south west waters of NSW, Minister for Primary Industries Ian Macdonald said today.

Fisheries officers conducted patrols along the Murray, Murrumbidgee, Wakool and Edward Rivers and also at Billabong Creek, Burrinjuck Dam, Blowering Dam and Lake Mulwala.

“This summer, fisheries officers are conducting regular patrols of our inland and coastal waterways to crackdown on illegal fishing activity,” Minister Macdonald said.

“A total of 365 fishers were checked on the weekends prior to and after the opening of the Murray cod season on December 1.

“In one case three people were apprehended and 82 golden perch were seized. They were issued with a total of $1800 in penalty notices for exceeding bag and possession limits...........[More]
