its been a while since i have posted on here... Have recently moved to teralba, near toronto. Went fishing yesterday and caught a beast of a dusky flathead on a gulp 2 inch natural prawn using 2kg braid. Measurements were 105cm long and 25cm across the head, and FAT. Any ideas on what a dusky this size would weigh? Is the biggest flathead i have seen in at least ten years. We were guessing anywhere between 6-10kg, but really have no idea. Will probably upload a pic later Cheers, jordan |

| thats not a flatty thats a genuine crocodile love to see a pic my pb 2 at 99cm one was 5.7 kg (very skinny )the other7.1kg (12 years ago in the maroochy river) there are still some around probably more than we think these days . i never cracked the magic metre mark (several in the 900-990 mm tho) have seen a few flatty lies at low tide on the yabby banks that were croc size ..there was a flatty that would hang around a certain restaurant deck eating scraps that was over 1200mm long but i think it has vanished now.excellent capture on that gear mate |
i'll throw a lure into a puddle not to see if there's anything in there but cos I'M GONNA catch the biggest fish in there |

There is a pic of a 130cm lizard on a Tas site at the moment ,caught from the Tamar this week . My best was 128cm from Swan Bay at Queenscliff about ten years ago .No idea on what they would weigh . I released the fish to breed another day . Apparently the big one's do most of the breeding . Lucky fish ,would of made a great mount ! Caught on 2kg is pretty impressive !!! And Toronto = Big Trout and Salmon ??? Lucky bugger ! Dave ...

scotti,
those were my exact sentiments as we dragged it up the river bank. It looked like a croc! And the fight on the 2kg was good fun, but she didnt have heaps of power due to the fact she had lost most of her tail...most likely from being attacked when she was a young'un. This girl was really fat, by far the fattest flathead i have ever seen. We wanted to release her but she swallowed the hook down so far that she was hooked in the gills and was bleeding really badly, so unfortunately she wasnt going to survive. Had to carry her home as she wasnt ever gunna fit in my backpack, we had 4 cars pull over to check her out on the way back and even one guy wanting a picture. Pictures will be coming later most likely. Cheers, jordan |

shanej,
I agree it is a shame that she died. I had every intention of releasing her, even tried to swim for about 5 minutes, but the damage from the hook was too great and she wasn't going to survive, she was bleeding heavily from the gills. Was sad to see her roll belly up as I was trying to release her.

That is fantastic catch on 2kg, particulrly as it sounds lik you were land-based ("as we dragged it up the river bank"). Shame she ddn't survive.....good on you for trying. Tommy |

Awesome fish. Really didn't think any of these lived in places you could get to without a boat. Gives me hope my Flatie quest will be succesful.
Cheers.. Andrew

| Good fish, I wouldn't be too upset about it dying. Apparently they start breeding from 60cm so that thing would have produced quite a few flatties. |

| Dont worry about it, it wasnt intentional mate |

| As long as you paid it the respect it deserved, by eating it. Great fish mate! |
