Wow,
6-8 pound line is pretty heavy. I only use 4lb Flourocarbon leader at most. Anyway. I haven't got a photo of the poppers i use for whiting but i'll put a photo up soon.

"In every species of fish I've angled for, it is the ones that have got away that thrill me the most, the ones that keep fresh in my memory. So I say it is good to lose fish. If we didn't, much of the thrill of angling would be gone."

whiting will hit anything small enough on the surface i tend to agree 4-6 lb fluro max and 6lb main braid gets those little poppers out very well.

my favourite lures for whiting and even the summer surface bream are below and the river2sea pops are very good also and great value

smith mebapens ,, towadi ,, Shirasu Lipless Minnow and lipped
ecogear prawns px45

Shirasu minnow lipped

mebapen are nice as they imitate a baby squid

anyway this sort of combo will steer you straight

Having just picked the brains of the guy who pioneered this fishing 10 years ago, he swears that the better leaders are heavier, around 12lb and no longer than 45cm. The lighter ones do not make the lure track as well as it should and for some reason, which he explain but I was on my 5 beer so I kind of lost the detail somewhere, the action is effected. SO try a heavier leader, down to 45cm or less.

i would agree some work better with a heavier leader but some will suffer with their presentation using a 12lb fluro it is too heavy a soft mono leader may be ok but fluro is a tad heavier.
some poppers will run nice with heavy leader but when were talking 3 grams it does not take much to turn a floater to a sinker.
Im not saying your mate is wrong just horses for courses try yourself with line class and see a towadi walks crappy with a heavy leader but run a pop-r and 12 is fine

good point, and I can confirm he was talking about Pop-R's. 12 might not be as good on other brand and style lures.
