Press Release:

This is effective 1st May 2002.

Background:

Due to concerns regarding the sustainability of Queenland tailor stocks, new legislative measures have been introduced for both commercial and recreational fishers.

The new management provisions will enhance the sustainability of tailor fish stocks. These provisions are based on scientific and biological advice on the needs for this fishery.

The new legislation has been introduced to ensure that future generations are able to enjoy the qualities of tailor fishing as well as providing a market choice for the consumer.

New Recreational Fishing Limits
A bag limit of 20 tailor for recreational fishers (note this is not a daily bag limit).

A special bag limit of 30 tailor will apply on Fraser Island during a stay on the Island of 72 hours or more. These bag limits apply to any person, including children, who catch fish.

The 30cm size limit remains.

New Commercial Fishing Limits
Commercial fishers will operate under an annual commercial quota for tailor of 120 tonnes.

New Closed Waters Conditions

The period of time relating to the closed waters area to all fishing which exists off Fraser Island between Indian Head and Waddy Point has now been extended and runs from 1 August to 30 September .
