Reduced Bag Limit at Four of the Five Premier Lakes

Lillydale Lake Sep 07 - premier fish caught

A Fisheries Notice has been introduced to reduce the bag/possession limit of salmonids at Lillydale Lake, Kennington Reservoir (Bendigo), Jubilee Lake (Daylesford) and Hyland Lake (Churchill).

As of 20 September 2007, the bag/possession limit of salmonids for these waters for the next twelve months is two.

This change is due to the stocking of large ‘Premier Trout' as part of the Go Fishing in Victoria' initiative. The control aims to encourage anglers to ‘share the resource', whilst still providing enough fish for a good family feed.

Eildon Pondage is not included in the Notice due to its higher stocking rate.

Great Outdoors and Fishing Expo 2007

The Great Outdoors and Fishing Expo will be held at Melbourne's Exhibition Centre from 4pm on Thursday 25 October until 6pm on Sunday 28 October.

The expo is an angler's heaven, displaying all the tools and information required for recreational anglers. This year the theme for the Fisheries Victoria stand will be Victoria's snapper fishery. The display will showcase informative panels on the popular species that are targeted by recreational anglers in and around Port Phillip Bay and is also of commercial importance. Other highlights for the Fisheries Victoria stand include a display tank holding live pinky snapper, a colouring-in activity for the kids and the release of the “2007/2008 Recreational Fishing Guide”, which will be available throughout the Expo.

For further information on displays, entry fees and opening times, interested parties can check out the www.biztradeshows.com.

Abalone collection ban to continue

Fisheries Victoria has extended a ban on taking abalone, all other shellfish and sea urchins along a stretch of coastline near Port Fairy. The ban applies to both recreational and commercial abalone fishers and also prohibits the collection and removal of any rock material from the area.

The area is bound by the high water mark from approximately 1 kilometre west of the Crags Car Park to Killarney Beach Car Park. It includes the area of marine waters extending seaward for between 500 to 700 metres.

The ban will continue until 30 March 2008 and is designed to protect accessible stocks from fishing pressure while they recover from the impact of the virus. Fisheries Victoria will continue to assess the effectiveness of the closure and its future use as a management measure during the next six moths.

The situation will be reviewed in consultation with the western zone industry in the lead up to the setting of the 2008/09 commercial quota season, which begins on 1 April 2008.
