Thousand's of Tailor Anglers Have Their Say
Thousands upon thousands of public responses to the Regulatory Impact
Statement on proposed changes to the management of the Queensland Tailor
Fishery has shown that the Department of Primary Industries Minister,
Henry Palaszczuk certainly has his fingers on the pulse of what Queenslander
Anglers are interested in.
The Minister has already shown the public, with his prompt and determined
actions on Fire Ants, that he can solve the toughest of problems.
The R.I.S. on the Tailor Fishery has generated more responses than
any other document ever put out by Fisheries asking for public comment.
Normal response numbers has only be in the hundreds for other Fisheries.
Queensland Recreational Anglers are passionate about their Tailor fishing
and believe that the money generated by their side of this fishery is
so vast that the suggested changes to this fishery should go one step
further than the R.I.S.and declare Tailor a "line caught only specie"
in Queensland.
This has already been done in NSW last year following Anglers requests.
It is estimated the total value of the 130,000 recreational anglers
chasing Tailor in Queensland each year could be as high as $90 million.
The total commercial catch is only worth $400,000 - $600,000.pa to
the Fishermen.
The Recreational Fishing Alliance believes that a system could be worked
out by all parties to phase out the few long-term beach netters that
rely on Tailor for a small portion of their income.
Members of the Queensland Recreational Fishing Alliance are: -
Boating Industry Association (QLD) representing 6,500 employees who
add $1.1 Billion to the States economy by building and selling Boats
and accessories.
The Queensland Recreational Industry of Fishing representing 3,000
employees in the Tackle Industry who add $60 Million to the States economy.
Sunfish Qld representing the interests of the 880,000 recreational
anglers that live in Queensland spending in the order of $1 billion
on their recreation.
